The Log House in Shane's Park is Finally Finished

RAILFENCE.JPG
JULY 2000 - Eagle Scout Candidate Josh Felver split rails and built this great pioneer fence as his finishing project. He studied the log fences of the time period and worked with George Wilson at his tree farm east of Rockford. Josh raised the funds for the project and drew the plans as well.

Spring 2000 - SCHS Members Bill Now and Bob Beerbower completed the rock chimney and chinking of the logs with the help of Jim Lugabihl. Norm VanTilburg and Harold Bollenbacher gave of their time as well. The memorial walkway is complete with a new flagpole and flags (donated by The Rockford American Legion and Sons of the Legion), which includes a modern United States Flag as well as the 13 Star Flag. Work was done in time for the annual Rockford Community Days Celebration in June 2000, although a bedrock border around the house was added in August to assist with rain runoff. Log houses of the time had no spouting.

CABINPATH.JPG
July 2000 - People visited a now quiet Shane's Park, touring the log house and herb garden, as they looked over the memorial walkway names, during the Community Days Celebration in June. The memorial walkway work was completed with donated labor by the New Horizon Church Men's group led by Rob Hoehamer. The historical society's committee placed the bricks. President Norm VanTilburg says a few cosmetic things like grass and donation plaques are still in the works.
